Which bits?

Many years ago, as a Postgraduate, I was studying Marine Science. One of the things we had to learn was how to take water quality tests. BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) and working out dissolved oxygen. Ugh I remember it was at least four pages of written calculus and you ended up with one damn number.

Once we mastered that, the Prof pulled out a water quality meter. You put the probe in the water and pushed two buttons…

I think I called him a d**k.

All credit to him. He patiently explained that you need to go through the process, the boring bits, you need to know how it comes together. You need to know where to look for problems when the result isn’t expected. Also, your kit can let you down and break. They were pricey back then.

Fair enough, I got it. Wasn’t happy, but I got it.

The point of this? When I keep reading the benefits of GenAI is to free up time and remove the boring bits…I think of that lesson and wonder which bits?

The people selling it aren’t the ones doing the job. Be careful which bits.

(I so wanted to be him 👇🏼 struggling in the hair colour department though)
