I'm happy in Fortress Europe

This is a good example of how Big Tech is, a bit of a mess.

Zuckerberg (Meta) and Ek (Spotify) co-wrote an op-ed for the Economist on why ‘Europe should embrace open source AI’. The link is here if you have a subscription.

Mark Zuckerberg and Daniel Ek on why Europe should embrace open-source AI
It risks falling behind because of incoherent and complex regulation, say the two tech CEOs

Apparently the EU is going to fall behind because of ‘incoherent and complex legislation’.

Uh-huh.

MG Siegler did a decent write up about how confusing this is:

Spotify & Meta Love Open-Source AI and the DMA, Wait...
A rather muddled op-ed from Daniel Ek & Mark Zuckerberg

Saves me typing my own thoughts. Pretty much covers it, with less eye rolling.

Let’s be clear, Big Tech does not like regulation that prevents them doing what they want to do, when they want to do it and how they want to do it. That’s saying the quiet part out loud.

What’s the big deal? More revenue more profit etc? Got to be good surely?

Anybody see the breach of ‘National Public Data’ in the US? Sounds like an official body but they’re a loathsome data broker. 2.9 Billion records…

That’s most certainly a capital ‘B’.

It looks like every Social Security Number (SSN) of every adult in the US. Pals there will understand what a pain that is:

“The breached database includes comprehensive citizen information, firstname, lastname, middlename, name_suff, address, city, county name, phone 1, aka1 fullname, ssn and more.”

I don’t know, call me an old fashioned but I’m glad I live in an area that looks to protect our data and looks to regulate the madness of some. I’m quite happy at work to understand and implement those requirements.

Sometimes it’s complex but it’s not incoherent.

What You Need To Know—And Do—About The Massive Social Security Numbers Breach
Taxpayers across the country were recently alarmed to learn that their Social Security numbers, addresses, and other personal information may have been exposed.
