Threat modelling
"Threat modeling works to identify, communicate, and understand threats and mitigations within the context of protecting something of value."
So they had the election in the US. With hindsight the result isn't surprising. More than half of Americans read below a 6th grade level (Snopes looked at it and it's true). Financial literacy has also hovered around 50% for quite a while. But I feel a lot of countries also have problems with the latter.
All of this does not bode well for making decisions with a critical mind and based on evidence - as we've now seen. Who knows what the next four years will bring. I don't think any of it is going to be good.
When threat modelling, AI and in particular LLM's were on my personal radar. Regulation (currently) in the UK and EU protects me and my data somewhat. But I can absolutely see in the next four years that American Tech companies will be let loose. This will bring a clash with Europe for sure - not sure how that is going to go.
I've had Gmail for my email since it launched. I got my account through an invite - you couldn't just sign up back then. At the time it was an easy trade off. Google were mostly still in their 'Don't be Evil' phase and it was better than running my own email server.
Over the years the number of accounts I have has grown to about six. It's a really good idea to keep some things separate.
The thought of moving was horrible as I know what it would entail. But after the election I think it's a very good time to start the migration.
Why don't I just run my own email server? Last time I did that I was young and had more energy than sense. No.
So I decided to move to Proton. I like the proposition they are also based in Switzerland so not in reach of the US Government.
So six Gmail addresses to migrate to six new email addresses across two custom domains. Every app or service needs to be changed. At the same time I'm rolling each password to give it a new 20 character alphanumeric password.
When it's done, I'll feel amazingly smug. But it's going to be a slog.
I may post periodic updates.
