The Tech Industry is going nuts

I’m back from the south of France. The twenty degree temperature difference is…a bit brutal.

It made me think about sustainability and the environment. KLM at least lets you do additional carbon offsets (at a cost). Reading through the following topics made me a little ‘frowny’:

Microsoft is going nuclear to power its AI ambitions
Microsoft is hiring someone to lead its nuclear strategy.

and

AI industry set to use as much energy as countries like Sweden or the Netherlands, study finds
AI comes with a huge carbon footprint and its development could see the industry’s energy consumption match levels of an entire country by 2027, a study has found.

and

AI is using vast amounts of water
Gallons of water are just one part of sustainability questions over the growth of artificial intelligence

and this

finally...

Microsoft is reportedly losing huge amounts of money on GitHub Copilot
Might GitHub Copilot become more expensive soon?

I worry the Technology industry will need a reckoning like the Energy industry somewhere down this line.

I can live without a summary of the meeting I didn’t attend if it means my Nieces lives are a little easier in years to come.

Or maybe, I dunno, I’ll just read the Minutes, or ask “How was the meeting?” to one of the team? It’d certainly make the annual environment/sustainability report easier to write.

(I possibly* saw one too many ‘This is the future!’ posts on LinkedIn when I got back)

*definitely
