Smoke and mirrors
You may hear the term AGI. It stands for Artificial General Intelligence and its basically AI that matches or surpasses human capabilities across a wide range of tasks. Like any computer in a sci-fi movie.
I put it in the same category as cold fusion, every crypto project (ever) and those searching for a viable business solution for blockchain*
Always imminent…in the next five to ten years.
The ‘Superalignment Team’ (who names these?) may think they were standing firm against the potential onslaught and takeover from AGI (which was imminent). But this is where I’d go “That’s nice” and scan the room for someone, anyone, to go and talk to instead.
There does desperately need to be safety teams overseeing some of these big AI projects. But they need to cover: Bias, misinformation and disinformation (there’s a difference) and protections for copyright, privacy and intellectual property. I’d like to say environmental impact but I’m not that naive.
The first impact is going to be AI ‘Slop’. Where we have ‘Spam’ for email we have ‘Slop’ for AI
Search engines are going to be flooded with slop and it’s going to be really hard to find good and accurate information (we’re pretty much there now).
Wider business is still looking for that killer use, 2025 budget cycles will start soon when you have to show a return on the investment, interest rates are being stubborn…
As for OpenAI? Consumer focus. I bet they want to be on every phone or device. Google are killing their own golden goose
Once on every device where you can have a flirty chat instead of Googling it? Well, next it’s pay a little so your product or service is suggested in results. That’s how the Google monster was born (I’m old enough to remember when it just showed you good, clean search results).
That’s what my money is on rather than super-intelligence.
(*if I triggered you with any of that I know you’ll prove me wrong. About 5-10 years?)
