Recall is a bad idea

A few weeks ago I was quietly applauding Microsoft for a new focus on security.

I suspect a test is imminent.

Yesterday they introduced new laptops. Copilot+ with a feature called ‘Recall’

Microsoft unveiled a new lineup of Windows machines it’s calling Copilot+ PCs, plus generative AI-powered features. And new Microsoft Surface devices are on the way.

It can basically remember everything you’ve done on your laptop for weeks or even months and help you find it again.

That’s a pretty big new layer to consider security for. Is there anything in that which should concern us? Luckily there’s an FAQ

“Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers. That data may be in snapshots that are stored on your device, especially when sites do not follow standard internet protocols like cloaking password entry.”

Hmm

“Recall also does not take snapshots of certain kinds of content, including InPrivate web browsing sessions in Microsoft Edge. It treats material protected with digital rights management (DRM) similarly; like other Windows apps such as the Snipping Tool, Recall will not store DRM content.”

Well at least they managed to push Edge (for a change) and not upset Hollywood 🤷‍♂️
