Learning a language

Being multilingual is a superpower (imo). I’ve consistently worked with people that have 3 or 4 languages which, when I was younger, just embarrassed me. Still does tbh.

A wee while ago I decided to do something about it. It was harder before the Pandemic. A lot of quick lessons in airport lounges. Ex colleagues may well remember cries of ‘Oh Lads I’ve got to do my lesson!’ while in a bar or restaurant. But I did it…every day.

And this has very slowly become one of my bigger achievements. Does it work? Well my reading and writing is far better than it’s ever been. My listening - not too bad. Spoken? Still not great. But that’s got a lot to do with confidence and consistent practice with a real life human being. Always good to push yourself outside of your comfort zone though.

Languages? French, until I spent a lot of time going to Germany and had a particular taxi ride that made me think “Ah Jayzuz why am I learning French?”, German, now Italian.
