Cloud lock-in
Good. Long overdue. It’ll be interesting to see what the CMA find. Looking at three elements: Egress costs; Savings Plans; Technical barriers to switch.
Very aware of egress costs (you really need to be careful working those out in planning). But a few weeks ago it was suggested in a conversation that one of the big providers throttles on egress. I’ve no idea if that was just one particular scenario, or where the finger should point, but no harm in looking at it.
The other two I’d be unsure about. If you’ve planned your infrastructure then surely you’re looking at a multi year cycle? Want to stay with us for cheaper? Yes please.
Technical barriers? Silly to look at some of the interesting IoT/ML style services the big providers are doing to differentiate themselves. And I’d suggest (with due respect) that most of the tech barriers to moving could be put down to badly architected infrastructure (Cloud first and Cloud agnostic, but not really as we needed to get it done).
