AI and Bias
A good few years ago I put a job description I’d wrote through a tool to analyse the gender bias in the words and narrative. One of the guys in HR suggested it as he’d been using it. I can never remember the name of the tool, but it was an eye opener. I didn’t do very well at first, and had to work harder than I expected to at least make it neutral.
I started to learn and think about unconscious bias then. Not an easy thing to do - I’m a Gen X man whose peers are mostly men. It’s not exactly going to impact me, I have things to do and targets to hit…so why put the effort in?
Well, because it’s bloody important. I don’t want to be part of the problem. I’d like to see beneficial change.
Anyway - always be mindful of bias. Especially if the dataset your tool uses hasn’t exactly been vetted.
