2024 will be a record year?

2024 on track to be a record year for ransomware payments. Brill.

2024 looks set to be another record-breaking year for ransomware — and it’s likely going to get worse | TechCrunch
This year, 2024, looks set to be the most profitable yet for hackers, with four ransom demands paid in the tens of millions of dollars.

Data extraction rather than encryption is a shift (increase of 30%).

Do you really need and use all the data you keep? Emails are a perfect example as folk love to keep every single email ‘Just in case’. But it’s a risk if you’re going to lose it.

When was the last time you looked at your data rentention and classification policy? Do you have one?

Interesting to hear Liska change their mind on banning ransomware payments:

“We’ve had 20-plus law enforcement actions just this year against ransomware, and that is fantastic. But if we’re going to feed eight-figure ransom payments to these attackers then that changes the incentive model. You might get arrested, but on the other hand, you might get an eight-figure ransom payment, that’s a challenge that is hard to resist. My answer is: ban ransom payments, which is a terrible solution, but it may be the least bad solution that we have,”

Obvious next step I would think.
